Islam Channel Launches Pioneering New Series To Find UK's Model Mosque 2007 26th September, 2007
Islam Channel is pleased to announce the launch of a pioneering new competition series on Islam Channel (SKY 813, www.islamchannel.tv) - “Model Mosque 07”.

The first in the series of ‘Model Mosque 07’ will be screened on Islam Channel – Sky 813 on Saturday 29th September. ‘Model Mosque 07’ is designed to celebrate and reward the positive attributes of the more than 1500 Mosques in the UK and to help bring balance to the debate on the role of a Mosque within British society . Its remit will be to highlight – using carefully selected criteria (see http://www.islamchannel.tv/modelmosque/ ) endorsed by the leading scholars; Imams and Muslim Community leaders in the UK, those attributes which constitute a successful Mosque in 21st century Britain. Its aim shall be to assist in providing a set of standards which will establish a template for which all UK Mosques can aspire to emulate. A select panel of the most esteemed Scholars and Imams from across the Muslim community will form the adjudication panel for the last four heats of the competition – the finalists will compete live at the Global Peace & Unity Event 2007 - the largest event of its kind in Europe (see http://www.theglobalunity.com/ ).

The series aims to:-

• To establish the template for what constitutes a modern Model UK mosque
• Explore what constitutes best practice amongst UK mosques
• Celebrate the success stories and to raise the profile of well-run mosques
• Encourage capacity building and cohesion within the community
• To promote and celebrate those Mosques which have successfully developed progressive integration/open door paractices
• Encourage inter-faith initiatives, activities and events
• Promote the most effective measures in tackling those that wish to distort the teachings of Islam within UK mosques in pursuit of other agenda
• To combat negative media portrayal of Mosques
• To set an achievable standard which all Mosques can aspire to emulate

Few will challenge the importance of this pioneering new series given the current wide-ranging debate in respect of the disparity in standards within U.K’s Mosques. We are delighted to confirm that almost half of the 1000 surveys distributed were returned completed and that our dedicated team have worked tirelessly to appraise the data in order to assess those Mosques which achieved the closest matches to the competition criteria.

Producer/Director Abrar Hussain says

"Mosques have been unfairly portrayed in the media for too long. This show is about restoring the balance."

Islam Channel CEO and Chief Executive Editor – Mohamed Ali says

“It is our sincere hope that the series will stimulate a positive debate about the structure and role of Mosques in today’s Britain and through positive recognition and celebration will help to dispel myths relating to the core values of the Muslim faith and how they relate to modern British society.”
