Brief History of London Islamic Cultural Society

Our Society the London Islamic Cultural Society was formed in July 1983 predominantly by Muslims from the Caribbean in particular Guyana, South America. This Society joined together members of the community religiously, culturally and socially with one of our aim being the provision of a Mosque/Cultural Centre and much needed services to our members and multi-ethnic community in general.

LICS is managed by a Board of Trustees who oversee and conduct the day-to-day business of the organisation.

In May 1985 we purchased our first centre, a house in Park View Road N17 for a sum of £41,260. It was quickly recognised that this was too small for the requirements of a progressive Society and so in July 1987 LICS purchased the current building in Wightman Road for a price of £150,500. In October 1991 land adjacent to the Centre was purchased from Haringey Council for a sum of £32,500. It was always member’s desire that a new building would be erected, which would provide improved facilities for the community.

In 1996, the Society was granted full planning approval to erect a Mosque/Cultural Centre and in September 1998 works commenced on the new building project, which was estimated to cost £614,900. Due to unforeseen circumstances and problems with the Contractor there has been an increase in this sum in the region of £900,000.

Despite major set backs the Society has, completed the construction of the new building project and through the generosity of members, Alhamdu lillah we have raised all the necessary finance for the completion of this construction. In November 2001the dream of many became a reality when Haringey’s first purpose built Mosque/Community Centre was completed.

The Centre was officially opened in July 2002 to all in the community irrespective of religion, gender or ethnicity. The opening event was a unique and remarkable experience where a diverse community joined together in thanking Almighty Allah for His blessings and guidance.

The progress and achievements of our Society we feel is unique and indeed inspiring it provides a beacon for others to follow, for when we were without funding we were not down hearted instead we gathered together and organised fundraising events – Bar-B-Ques, Dinners, sponsored events like the cricket match, sponsored swim and walks to name a few and in three short years LICS raised over £900,000 from users, friends and family.

The London Islamic Cultural Society is totally self financing. The society receives no grants or income from any external body. Finances are generated through valuable donations, membership and fund raising events.

The Society has over the years developed good working relations with the community, Haringey Council, Metropolitan Police, Faith Groups, Schools and a variety of other agencies. We hold various activities which include, Sisters’ Circle, Tafseer classes, Islamic weekend and weekday classes, lectures, Sisters’ Keep fit, Bazaars, Bar-B-Ques, Elderly Tea Afternoons, and Fundraising Dinners.

In addition to the above, LICS provides advice sessions, make funeral arrangements, visit the sick, and perform marriage ceremonies and counselling. Our Society actively promotes the inclusion of sisters who are represented in management.

The Mosque is open and used by a diverse range of brothers and sisters who see this Mosque as their home, a place where they are comfortable and safe.

Now that the Mosque is free, this progressive Society can look ahead to the other projects needed by the Ummah – such as facilities to bathe the dead, provisions for our elderly [LICS Muslim Care Home], not to mention the urgent need to provide leisure and recreational facilities for our youths in order to keep them in an Islamic environment and improvement to facilities available for our sisters.

Let us work together to improve and build on our unique and wonderful Society.

Events

During this year your Society has continued its work with the Muslim Ummah and wider community to promote our religion and to alleviate concerns and fears that people of different faiths have about Islam.

We continue to work with the local council, the Police, Faith Groups, hospitals, and other agencies. This partnership working was clearly visible at the Community Fun Day event which was held on 8 July 07. Over 500 visitors came along to share in the activities which included face painting, henna artist, Islamic rap, and a conducted tour around the Mosque and a display of unique and inspiring Islamic art by Bro. Nizar Boga. Some visitors also witnessed the Zuhr pray being performed, which they found very educational!

This was an inspiring event not only for non-Muslims but also those members who attended. MPs, Haringey councillors and leaders turned out in force to support this event.

Another daily activity that takes place in the Mosque/Cultural Centre is the Islamic schools. We have several schools providing essential teachings to our youths. The weekend school run by Safar Academy held its annual prize giving ceremony on Sunday 29 July 07.

The hall was filled to capacity with parents eager to hear of their child’s progress and to see the plays, listen to nasheeds, rap songs and see the skills of the children in their presentations.

The Secretary, Sister Bibi Rabbiyah Khan represented the Board of Trustees and presented a gift to the child who has made the most progress in the year. The prize was awarded to young Sister Aneesa Shahid, 12years of age. The Secretary commended Bro. Hasan Ali who has devoted his time and energy in formulating and establishing this school with academic standards that are clearly transparent. The success of this school can be measured in one simple statistic –there are seventeen teachers teaching the 200 children who attend these classes, 13 of these teachers were ex-students, Al hamdulillah.

LICS continue to support all the classes by providing the accommodation free of charge. LICS is working continuously to support, advise and help our community. We will continue to do this work but need your help to maintain our programme. If you have any free time, please come and ask if you can help.
Visits continue on a weekly basis to the Mosque/Cultural Centre by schools, universities, and faith groups. The President assisted by the Imam conduct a tour of the building and deliver educational lectures to enlighten those attending/visiting.
