NOOR UL ISLAM TRUST
LEYTON, LONDON

History
Noor Ul Islam Trust was formed in 1990 after a group of brothers met to discuss the needs of the Muslim community in the Leyton area. A distinct lack of facilities and services aimed at Muslims in need spurred a small group of volunteers on to form the Noor Ul Islam Trust. Around 20 brothers used to meet for Taraweeh prayers in Ramadhan at the start. Now Alhadulillah this figure is over 1000.

Noor Ul Islam became a registered Charity in 1993. It then acquired adjacent properties to service its purpose. A video club, snooker club/bar and wine merchants office as well as a printer factory were bought since 1990 by the Trust. These four neighbouring building now form the Hub of the Muslim community in this part of London.

These purchases have allowed the main mosque building to be inter-linked with the community hall and centre as well as the pre-school. The trust acquired the above buildings plus its Primary School site (around ½ mile away from the mosque) solely through the help of the local community give donations and interest-free loans.

Stakeholders
There are now 1000+ congregation (brothers and sisters) from a whole array of countries, such as Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Somalia, Mauritius, Algeria, Britain to name a few. There are also 80 children attending the Trust’s Pre-School and over 160 children attending its full time primary school. We have 28 boys studying Hifz (learning the Quraan by heart) and 34 sisters undertaking our Alimah course. Our pupils at our Primary School are achieving way above average on the SATs at 11 years old.

Aims
The Trust is currently seeking views of a cross section of the community, both Muslims and non-Muslims. Its Think Tank is forming a Vision Document as to where the local community needs to be in 2025. This is fairly revolutionary for a mosque to undertake. It is hoped that the vision document will be an exemplar for others to follow.

Activity
Throughout the Trust’s humble beginnings, it is eager and desperate to provide the local community with even more services. It currently has a Pre-School (Nursery), Primary School, tuition service, Alimah course, separate swimming sessions for men and women, adult education classes, a youth group, women’s group, Health project (inc circumcision service for boys), Dawaah project (including regular seminars and talk for Muslims and non-Muslim) and funeral services plus a lot more. However the successes of these project has made the Trustees realise how much more can be and should be done. Plans are now afloat to build a purpose built mosque and community centre that will be an asset to the whole borough.

Currently the Trust is in negotiations with the local authority to run a number of high profile events for Islam Awareness Week. Having run a number of successful Islam Awareness days for public sector workers and the public at large, the Trust is in a good position to be the local focal point for the Islam Awareness Week in November.

Noor Ul Islam is a humble Trust, with humble beginnings. It tries to do what it best for the community whilst pleasing Allaah. It is not the biggest or more luxurious mosque, but it is run with a genuine love of Islaam. Please remember us in your duas that we are able to achieve what we have set out to do and remain on the straight path.
